How To Prevent Cavities

We’d all like to take the best care possible of our teeth. We brush, we floss, we repeat. What else can we do to help prevent dental decay, also known as cavities, for ourselves and our children? Here are some tips to help keep our teeth and gums healthy:

1. Brush with fluoride toothpaste

Make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride. Ask your dentist what age your children should start using fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is often referred to as nature’s cavity fighter. It helps to keep our teeth strong. We need to brush and floss at least twice daily and for at least two minutes each time.

2. Brush after each meal if possible

If this isn’t possible, chew sugar free gum after a meal when you can’t access your toothbrush. Sugar free gum will help clean the surfaces of your teeth and remove any food particles so they can’t sit on your teeth and cause decay.

3. Use products with the ADA Seal of Approval

The ADA (American Dental Association) only puts its seal of approval on products it has researched and determined to be safe and effective for our oral care. You can look for the ADA seal on toothpastes, toothbrushes, mouthwashes, etc. You can ask your Bright Side Dental dentist for recommendations and samples as well!

4. Ask about fluoride treatments

Ask your Bright Side Dental dentist if regular fluoride treatments are a good idea for you and your family members. It can give you added protection from decay.

5. Avoid lots of sugary snacks and drinks

If you graze or drink sugary drinks throughout the day, your teeth are under a constant sugar attack. This makes decay more likely to form. Try to drink water throughout the day rather than soda, juice, milk, or coffee with cream or sugar. It can be a hard habit to break, but your teeth will thank you.

6. Visit the dentist every 6 months

dental exam and checkup will remove any plaque from your teeth and your family’s teeth. The health of your gums will be checked as well. If there is any decay, it can be spotted in its earliest stages and sometimes can be reversed without the need for a filling!
